Nancy Pauwels / Shutterstock.comSouth Africa has topped the list of adventure travel destinations in the Global Rescue Autumn 2026 Traveller Sentiment and Safety Survey. The survey, which polled experienced international travellers, ranked the United States second and Argentina third. However, preferences varied across different groups. Nepal was the top choice among non-US respondents, while women favoured the United States.
The results revealed clear differences between US and international travellers. US respondents ranked South Africa first, followed by the United States, Argentina, New Zealand and Canada. In contrast, non-US travellers favoured Nepal, with Italy, Australia and Mongolia also making their top choices. Notably, South Africa was the only destination to feature in the top five for both groups.
The survey also identified differences by gender. Men favoured South Africa, followed by Argentina, the United States, Canada and Australia. Meanwhile, women ranked the United States first, ahead of South Africa, New Zealand, Argentina and Italy. Men showed a stronger preference for Canada, while women were more likely to choose New Zealand.
Dan Richards, CEO of The Global Rescue Companies, highlighted the importance of safety planning when undertaking adventure trips. He said: "A great adventure starts with curiosity but it should also include a plan for getting help."
Conducted from 6 to 10 October 2026, the survey provides insights into experienced international travellers' adventure preferences, travel safety concerns and views on global mobility.
