TravelAI acquires Sonder, relaunches Sonder.com

TravelAI, known as the Travel Memory Company, has acquired the iconic travel brand Sonder, including its global trademark and domain portfolio, but not its operational assets. The acquisition, announced on 27 July 2026, marks the relaunch of Sonder.com as a curated guide for boutique hotels and urban accommodations, leveraging TravelAI's memory infrastructure.

Sonder, originally founded in Montreal in 2014, was a prominent name in design-led urban travel, offering high-end flat-style stays. However, following the termination of its partnership with Marriott International in November 2025, Sonder's parent company began winding down operations. TravelAI's acquisition does not include Sonder's properties, leases, or staff, focusing solely on its brand and intellectual property.

John Lyotier, CEO of TravelAI, stated, "We acquired the one brand in travel whose name already means what we are building with our memory infrastructure." The new Sonder.com will not operate hotels but will provide a curated selection of accommodations based on design, neighbourhood, and quality, covering major urban centres like New York, London, and Dubai.

The acquisition was completed through a court-supervised bankruptcy process in Canada, with the Superior Court of Québec approving the sale. TravelAI, a Canadian company, sees this as a homecoming for the brand, which originally began in Canada.

TravelAI continues to expand its portfolio, having previously acquired brands like Casai and Smartours. The company is also developing AI infrastructure to enhance personalisation in travel experiences, with Sonder.com set to evolve alongside these technological advancements
