Travellers are increasingly opting for shorter trips and cooler destinations this summer, as revealed by Trip.com Group's recent analysis.

The company noted a significant 40% year-on-year increase in bookings for short trips, with holidaymakers favouring quick escapes and cooler climates. This trend is particularly evident in regions such as East Asia and Europe, where short-haul flights have surged by 73%.

Family travel is also on the rise, with more families taking advantage of school holidays. Hotel bookings for families with children aged 12 and below have more than doubled in markets like Mainland China, South Korea, and Japan. A survey by Trip.com Group highlighted that family trips are now the most appealing travel experience, surpassing trips with partners or friends.

Additionally, the demand for "coolcations"—holidays in cooler climates—has increased by 74% year-on-year. Destinations such as Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland are seeing a rise in interest, whilst Asian locations like Inner Mongolia and Sapporo are attracting more international visitors. Ulaanbaatar and Sapporo, with their mild summer temperatures, are among the top choices for South Korean travellers.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in travel planning is also becoming more prevalent. Tools like TripGenie and TripPlanner are helping travellers create customised itineraries quickly, with AI-assisted order volumes on Trip.com increasing by 400% year-on-year. This shift towards AI indicates a growing reliance on technology for travel inspiration and bookings, making trip planning more efficient and accessible
