Taiwan puts its best foot forward for British travel pros

Taiwan Tourism recently took over London’s iconic venue Outernet London on Tottenham Court Road to show the British travel industry why the country has so much to offer UK travellers. Trade guests were immersed in the sights and sounds of Taiwan at the event held on Thursday, 12th June.  Inspired by Taiwan Tourism’s 3.0 theme Taiwan: Waves of Wonder, it celebrated the island’s stunning natural beauty and vibrant culture, and fare offered to guests included night market delicacies and cocktails celebrating Taiwanese flavours. A resounding success Linda Lin, director of the Taiwan Tourism Administration (TTA)’s London office, declared: “The Outernet event was a resounding success and kicked off a two-day takeover of Taiwan in one of central London’s most iconic venues. The trade event really showcased the best of Taiwan: the spirit of the people of Taiwan and our beautiful scenery.” Lin pointed out how Taiwan is a vibrant island destination that effortlessly blends rich cultural heritage with stunning natural beauty and modern convenience.  From bustling night markets and centuries-old temples to lush mountains, hot springs, and scenic coastlines, the country offers something for every type of traveller.  Renowned for its safety, cleanliness, and efficient public transportation, Taiwan is especially welcoming to families, solo adventurers, and digital nomads alike. Lin added: “Visitors can immerse themselves in authentic cultural experience, such as calligraphy workshops, traditional tea ceremonies, and homestays in rural villages, while also enjoying world-class dining, lively festivals, and high-quality yet affordable accommodation. With its warm hospitality, compact size, and diverse attractions, Taiwan is an ideal destination for those seeking both adventure and connection.” A strong wave of enthusiasm For his part, Taiwanese ambassador to the UK Vincent Ching-Hsiang Yao found himself impressed by the UK’s palpable enthusiasm for Taiwan.  He remarked: “I am proud that the UK is embracing many facets of Taiwanese culture, and to see the travel trade wholeheartedly support the efforts of our Tourism team at this event demonstrates the very special relationship Taiwan continues to have with the UK travel industry.” During the event, specialist tour operator Wendy Wu Tours gave away a holiday prize to guests at the Taiwan Outernet takeover, with members of the public also able to enter during the daytime activities held during the two-day event. Sara Dolan, head of air and partnerships for Wendy Wu Tours, said of the event:“Taiwan has so much to offer as a destination, which is why Wendy Wu Tours was thrilled to get involved with this pop up. Thanks to creative Taiwan exposure like this, I am sure greater numbers of UK travellers will discover why Taiwan is a truly unique and enchanting holiday destination.”

Tourism Authority of Thailand sets Taiwanese students off on a railway adventure

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) hosted a special welcome ceremony at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station for 240 students and teachers from Taiwan’s top international schools on Thursday, 22nd May.  Led by TAT deputy governor for international marketing in Asia and the South Pacific Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai, the event included a traditional cultural performance and the presentation of souvenirs, reinforcing Thailand’s reputation for warm, gracious hospitality. This visit marked the beginning of a week-long educational rail journey running from 22nd to 29th May, which seeks to immerse students and their teachers into Thailand’s cultural depth and the appeal of train travel through the northern region.  The group will explore a range of iconic sites, including the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok, Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in Ratchaburi, and Tha Phae Gate in Chiang Mai, all while experiencing the country’s landscapes and local life along the rail route. Ongoing efforts The initiative is part of TAT’s broader strategy to diversify Thailand’s tourism offerings and attract new segments of travellers.  With a goal of welcoming 1.2 million Taiwanese visitors in 2025 in order to achieve an eight percent increase in tourism revenue, TAT is focused on high-value, experience-rich travel.  From 1st January to 21st May, Thailand received 405,503 Taiwanese visitors, reflecting a slight decline of 2.21 percent compared to the same period last year.  However, the outlook remains positive, with flight capacity between Taiwan and Thailand up by six percent, totalling over 2.1 million seats in 2025.  Taiwanese tourists currently average 6.25 nights per visit and spend about 5,896 baht daily, or roughly 36,850 Baht per trip. This student rail tour is one of many efforts aligned with the government’s Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025 campaign, designed to boost international arrivals through exclusive incentives and fresh travel experiences.  TAT anticipates that this programme will not only create lasting impressions but also inspire a new wave of educational and experiential tourism in Thailand.

Klook: Philippine travellers hankering to go to Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam

Klook Philippines presented the results of its 2025 Travel Pulse Study which looked into the different travel behaviours and preferences of Filipinos over the past year today, 29th April. Study results show a particular shift with regard to dream destinations, as Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam came away as the top three choices for this year. This year’s study specifically highlighted the likes and preferences of the younger generations, namely Millennials and Gen Z.  General manager Michello Ho said: “Overall, we’ve seen Filipinos take more chances on travelling in 2024 and definitely aren’t slowing down in 2025. It’s even reached the extent that Millennials and Gen Zs perceive it to be a therapeutic tool. From being considered a love language last year, to being a form of therapy today, it goes to show that travel continues to evolve in different ways to serve each individual's unique definition of joy.” Today’s event also featured the launch of an official partnership between Klook Philippines and Hospitality Innovators, Inc. (HII) which stemmed from the results of the study. Relevant findings The survey found that 98.5 percent of Filipino respondents have plans to travel domestically as well as nearby locations in the next year, while more than half shared that they plan to travel internationally.  Klook also noted that, aside from the usual international hotspots like Japan, South Korea and Singapore; Vietnam, Taiwan, and Thailand were emerging in popularity amongst Filipinos. With regard to travel habits, it was noted that planning in advance remains a fundamental part of the Filipino travel experience, as 39 percent of travellers booked their flights and accommodations up to three months ahead of the trip. Interestingly, only 27 percent of respondents booked their experience in-destination. Once at their destination, 63 percent of Filipinos shared that they try out adventurous tours, digital detox, wellness, and meditation retreats, and are aligned with the spirit of trying out new things. On the other hand, 57 percent take on hidden gem adventures, while 54 percent try out workshops and classes that pique their interest.  The top consideration Filipinos made when booking their travels revolved around vacationing during times when weather conditions were optimal. Scheduling around work and school vacations were ranked of equal importance, scoring 29.9 percent,  followed by the affordability of the travel options available to them.  How social media comes into play Social media plays a significant role in travel inspiration as 89 percent of Filipinos choose to visit a destination because it was popular on social media. This was evident to the platform following a 157 percent increase in revenue for Vietnam tourism services and products made on Klook after Klook Kreators started posting about their travels to Vietnam.  On the topic of Klook’s community of Kreators, the program is set to continue making an impact as Kreator-generated sales have increased by 20 percent in Q1 2025 versus Q4 2024. Quick content such as photos and short-form videos  are considered the go-to travel guides for Pinoys followed by long-form videos and in-depth blog posts that dive deeper into destination. Ho explained: “Based on our study, social media has definitely made an impact on the way Filipinos plan their travels, and the motivations that create their itineraries. It’s become a means of digitalization that drives a more intense desire to travel and explore what’s out there.” While TikTok is only the third most popular application among respondents, the study shows that compared to the regional average, Filipinos are more than two times more likely to engage with TikTok for travel inspiration.  The rankings haven’t changed much as Facebook remains to lead the list (84%), followed by Youtube (73%), and Instagram places last (63%).

Taiwan lauds Philippine policy regarding trade-centric travel

Taiwan conveyed its interest to boost economic exchanges with the Philippines as its government clarified the relevant travel policy for Filipino officials visiting the island for trade purposes. In a statement released on Tuesday, 22nd April, Taiwanese minister of foreign affairs referred to the matter as a pragmatic move on the part of the Philippine government as it declared it would allow Taiwan to deepen substantive cooperation with their country. Currently, Taiwan remains the Philippines’ eighth largest export market, ninth largest trading partner, and 10th largest source of imports. Despite not having any formal diplomatic relations, the Philippines and Taiwan work together via commercial, economic, cultural and other unofficial contacts brokered through the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office. Relevant guidelines Philippine executive secretary Lucas Bersamin signed Memorandum Circular (MC) 82 last 15th April, reinforcing the guidelines for travel limitations to Taiwan initially imposed under Executive Order 313 in 1989. The MC was issued to maximise opportunities for the development and expansion of the Philippines' priority areas of investments. Under MC 82, Philippine government officials visiting Taiwan for economic, trade and investment purposes are allowed, provided they use their ordinary passports and without using their official titles. Furthermore, they are required to inform, coordinate and submit a report about their visit to the MECO and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). The MC also states that Philippine government officials and agencies may receive delegations from Taiwan for economic, trade and investment purposes, provided MECO is notified at least five days in advance. However, it maintained that no agreements, memoranda of understanding, exchange of notes or similar documents can be signed with any Taiwanese organization or agency pending clearance from the DFA. It also reiterated that travel restrictions apply strictly to the President, Vice President, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and Secretary of National Defense.

Taiwanese government proposes disclosure mechanism for China travel

Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) seeks to propose amendments echoing President William Lai’s call for a disclosure mechanism covering Taiwanese officials travelling to China. Lai called for such a tool on Thursday, 13th March, as a way of ensuring that national and local government officials visiting China for exchanges remain transparent and accountable to their constituents. During a news conference, Lai declared: “From government officials to elected representatives, from legislators to village and borough wardens, all should make their information exchanges with the Mainland public and transparent for accountability." The Taiwanese President added that this mechanism aims to prevent Beijing from interfering in his country’s affairs of state. Working on proposals As of Saturday, 15th March, DPP caucus chief executive Rosalia Wu advised the public that party legislators are working with government officials, particularly those involved in national security, to enact Lai’s 17 proposals. Wu added that the caucus already drafted bills for some of these proposals, while others remain under discussion. Taiwan’s legislators need to put national security as the top priority, particularly in the face of Mainland China’s increasingly aggressive attempts to infiltrate Taiwanese society. Once these changes are implemented, officials at the municipal and county levels will be required to obtain approval from the national government before traveling to China. Meanwhile, mainland affairs council minister Chiu Chui-cheng urged ordinary Taiwanese citizens on Friday, 14th March, to report to the government before traveling to China to protect their safety.

Tourist interest in Taiwan surged in January

Agoda reports that there was a significant surge in hotel searches for Taiwan by Asian travellers in January.  On Thursday, 27th February, the online travel platform announced that searches for accommodations by Indian and Filipino travelers were up by 40 percent over the same period last year. This was attributed Agoda to the Taiwan Tourism Administration (TTA)’s setting up of tourism service offices in those countries last year. The report also pointed out that Taiwan's appeal to travelers from the Philippines, Indonesia, and India continues to grow. Effective campaigns TTA's promotional efforts in key Asian markets and the establishment of tourism offices in Manila, Jakarta, and Mumbai helped increase Taiwan’s exposure. Agoda researchers also pointed out that Taiwan’s geographical location, visa-free policies, and deep cultural ties make it an ideal travel destination for Filipino tourists. They added that Indonesian travelers can likewise enjoy Taiwan’s increasingly Muslim-friendly facilities, including halal-certified restaurants. Interest on the rise Meanwhile, Indian interest in Taiwan continues to rise. For Indians, Taiwan is not only a filming location for several Bollywood movies. Indeed the East Asian nation also offers rich adventure tourism experiences, as well as a vegetarian-friendly environment. Compared to the same period last year, the top five Asian markets most interested in Taiwan in January were Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and Thailand.

Philippines to work with MECO to promote sports tourism in Taiwan

The Philippines aims to boost numbers in terms of Taiwanese arrivals by way of sports tourism, particularly golf and diving. In a release issued on Wednesday, 19th February, the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) will be working with the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) to increase inbound tourists from Taiwan by way of several initiatives, including joint promotional campaigns. Tourism secretary Christina Frasco and MECO chair and resident representative Cheloy Velicaria-Garafil discussed the partnership during the latter’s courtesy visit on Tuesday, 18th February. According to the DOT, the meeting served as a platform to discuss strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing tourism cooperation between the two destinations. It also explored the possibility of renewing and updating the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on tourism cooperation between MECO and the DOT to further solidify tourism collaboration. Advancing cooperation between nations For her part, Garafil said the MECO will continue advancing tourism cooperation with Taiwan as she highlights the opportunities in tapping into the Taiwanese travel market, particularly through sports tourism attractions like golf courses and dive sites. She said collaborative efforts in marketing, policy support, and enhanced connectivity would further position the Philippines as a top destination for Taiwanese travelers. Meanwhile, the two officials agreed to develop policies that will facilitate seamless travel and destination opportunities between the Philippines and Taiwan.
