China Southern Launches Direct Flights from Sydney to Beijing Daxing

In an exciting development for Australian travellers, China Southern Airlines has announced the launch of a direct service between Sydney and Beijing Daxing Airport, starting 13 December 2024. This new route will operate four times a week, making Sydney the first Australian city to connect with Beijing’s second airport, Daxing. A New Gateway to Beijing Beijing Daxing Airport, completed in June 2019 and nicknamed “the starfish” due to its unique design, is renowned as the world’s largest single-building terminal. Since its opening, Daxing has hosted 65 Chinese and international airlines, served over 127 million passengers, and handled more than 980,000 flight movements. The airport currently offers flights to 35 international destinations, with Sydney becoming its first destination in Oceania. Enhanced Connectivity and Comfort The new Sydney-Daxing flights will be operated by Airbus A333 aircraft, featuring 28 Business Class seats and 258 Economy Class seats. This service is set to significantly enhance connectivity for passengers travelling to mainland China, providing more options and convenience. Sydney Airport’s Commitment to Growth Greg Botham, Group Executive of Aviation Growth & Group Strategy at Sydney Airport, expressed pride in this milestone, stating, “We are proud to be the first airport in Australia offering flights to Beijing Daxing, providing passengers with unprecedented choice and convenience when travelling to Sydney. This marks another step in our commitment to improving connectivity with mainland China.” Boosting Travel and Economic Recovery With the travel market recovering to nearly 90% in the first half of 2024 and peaking at 97% in July, these new flights are expected to add much-needed capacity and support further recovery. This move reinforces Sydney’s position as the premier gateway for traffic to and from China, offering a strong impetus for tourism and business travel. Looking Forward The new flight schedule is part of a 10-week initial season, with Sydney Airport being the first in Australia to offer services to Beijing Daxing four times per week. As the market recovers, these flights will link Australia and China, fostering better connectivity and economic growth. Are you excited about the new direct flights to Beijing Daxing? How do you think this will impact travel between Australia and China?

Qatar Airways and China Southern Airlines sign a MoU

Qatar Airways and China Southern Airlines have announced the next phase of their comprehensive partnership – which includes a codeshare agreement – with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance travel options and convenience for passengers. The MoU outlines a framework for the two airlines to boost their market presence and collaboration in the areas of cargo and frequent flyer programmes. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer and China Southern Airlines President and CEO, Han Wensheng signed the MoU on behalf of their airlines. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said: “As part of our robust partnership with China Southern Airlines, Qatar Airways is building on the success of the new route from Doha to Guangzhou, which was launched in April this year, to offer more choice to both airline passengers. It is a proud milestone for us to serve the prominent Chinese market in collaboration with our key partner, and look forward to extending our award-winning offerings to travellers flying through China.” President and CEO of China Southern Air Holding Company Limited, Han Wensheng said: “China Southern Airlines launched a direct route from Guangzhou to Doha in April, which has strongly promoted the connectivity between China and countries and regions along the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’. In the future, China Southern Airlines will deepen cooperation with Qatar Airways, strengthen complementary advantages, and work together to bring more comfortable and convenient travel experiences to our passengers.” Qatar Airways and China Southern will further collaborate to provide their respective Privilege Club and Sky Pearl Club members’ frequent flyer benefits. These include collecting and spending Avios/Miles on both Qatar Airways and China Southern flights, as well as tier benefits in the form of lounge access and other airport offerings.

China Southern Airlines to Resume Flights to Perth

China Southern Airlines is set to resume its direct flights from Guangzhou to Perth on November 28, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the reconnection of Western Australia with mainland China. Perth Airport’s Chief Commercial and Aviation Officer, Kate Holsgrove, made the announcement, emphasising the substantial impact this will have on the region’s tourism industry. With China as Western Australia’s fourth-largest visitor market, the state welcomed 54,000 Chinese visitors in 2023, contributing $230 million to the local economy. This success is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Tourism WA, the state government, and China Southern Airlines. The resumption of non-stop services, a result of this unity, is expected to further boost visitation numbers, bringing us all closer to our shared goals. The thrice-weekly service, operating on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, promises to deliver 86,000 seats and 5,000 tonnes of cargo capacity annually to the Perth market. This direct air link is anticipated to enhance key export sectors such as fresh produce, business, and leisure tourism, strengthening Western Australia’s overall economic landscape. Deputy Premier and Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti hailed the announcement as a game-changer for Western Australian tourism. The direct flights are projected to increase visitor numbers and spending significantly, energising related industries like agriculture and business. This move further cements the state’s position as Australia’s Western Gateway. Importantly, it represents a major victory for the local Chinese community in WA, offering them stronger ties with their homeland and recognising their significant contribution to our shared success. The return of China Southern Airlines to Perth is a win for the tourism sector and a broader economic triumph. It promises to invigorate multiple facets of Western Australia’s vibrant economy.

China Southern Airlines to add 17 international routes

China Southern Airlines on Monday launched its first flight between Beijing and Macau and said it plans to add 17 international routes, in a sign it expects a pick-up in international travel this year. The airline said at an event in Beijing the routes would be launched in the coming months before Oct. 26. The new routes would include Amsterdam, London, Doha, Riyadh and Tehran, executives from the airline said. Macau, a special administrative region of China, is a popular tourist spot and the world's biggest gambling hub. China's international airline industry has recovered only slowly following the lifting of pandemic restrictions in early 2023, struggling to match gains in domestic travel as consumers remain price-sensitive in a sluggish economy. China Southern's international route network has to date recovered to 80% of 2019 levels, and the airline hopes the new routes will help take it to 85% by the end of this year, Chen Ling, a deputy manager in China Southern's north China marketing department, told reporters. China Southern, one of China's three state carriers, last Wednesday reported an annual loss of 4.1 billion yuan, which it attributed to weak consumer spending power, jet fuel costs, supply chain problems and the depreciation of the yuan. Hopes are high however that international travel out of China can turn a corner this year. China's aviation regulator said in January it expected the number of international flights to and from the country to reach 6,000 per week by the end of this year, or about 80% of pre-COVID levels. China Southern Gives Up The A380

About 12 years after receiving its first superjumbo aircraft, China Southern has decommissioned its last A380. The airline’s peak saw them using their five A380s on domestic and international flights to places like Los Angeles, Sydney, and Amsterdam. The carrier has steadily been disposing of its A380 fleet, with the final superjumbo revenue flight believed to have taken place in November 2022, even though two A380s remained on China Southern’s books. However, the airline’s half-year financial report, released this week, indicates that the last two A380s have already left the carrier’s fleet, as reported by flightglobal.com. Two more of Lufthansa’s A380 superjumbos will be put back into service, the airline said this week. After hitting rock bottom during COVID-19 when nearly every carrier grounded their A380 fleets, the superjumbo has been riding high over the past few months. In July, Etihad put one of its four A380s back into service, and only last month, Qantas said it would restart service for the last of its ten superjumbos. Even used A380s are finding new homes; new transatlantic airline Global Airlines bought four. So, is the A380 genuinely dead, or is there a thriving love affair, given that pent-up demand is likely to be well above pre-pandemic levels?

China Southern Boosts Flights To Australia

China Southern Airlines is planning to expand its operations to Australia further. The airline’s flights between Guangzhou and Sydney will begin operating twice daily starting early next month. The carrier currently flies ten weekly Boeing 787-9 services on the route to Sydney, and it is continuing to swiftly build up its operations following the relaxation of pandemic restrictions in China. The airline Guangzhou-Melbourne services will also see a boost in overall capacity beginning on 8 June 2023. The airline intends to fly a two-class 334-seat Airbus A350-900XWB on the route rather than its previous configuration of 313 seats, and this change will take effect simultaneously. The China Southern aircraft, which has a capacity of 313 passengers, will soon begin flying between Guangzhou and Dhaka instead of Melbourne.

China Southern signs pact with Qatar Airways

China Southern Airlines has signed a code share agreement with Qatar Airways, effective from 15 January 2020 subject to governmental approval. As the first step to strengthen the cooperation between the two airlines, this code share agreement will further improve China Southern’s network in the Middle East market and provide more diversified choices for passengers travelling with China Southern. Moreover, this agreement will enable China Southern passengers to book the flights on Qatar Airways between Doha and Guangzhou/Beijing and further connect to more than 80 destinations in the Middle East, Europe and Africa via Doha. Together with Qatar Airways, China Southern Airlines will better develop ‘dual-hub’ strategy in Guangzhou and Beijing, and further improve the network in Middle East region.
