Cape Town, South Africa. ByDroneVideos / Shutterstock.comSouth Africa is expanding its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system to make travel easier for visitors from India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Indian passport holders can now apply for travel authorisation online, removing the need for the traditional visa application process.
The latest updates also allow parents and guardians to apply on behalf of minors. Children aged seven and older must complete biometric capture and enrolment in the Department of Home Affairs National Identification System.
A new multi-applicant feature lets families and groups submit applications through a single portal, making the process simpler for travellers.
South Africa introduced the expanded system in phases, adding more countries in August and September 2026. The ETA is now available in 53 countries and replaces the previous eVisa programme.
The government plans to expand the system further in key growth markets as South Africa prepares to host the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2027. Authorities will decommission the eVisa system on 1 December 2026, completing the transition to the digital platform.
“Indian travellers are increasingly looking for destinations that offer memorable experiences alongside greater convenience. The continued expansion of South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation is an important step towards making travel planning simpler for eligible visitors, including families and groups,” said Neliswa Nkani, Hub Head MEISEA at South African Tourism.
Travellers should check their eligibility and submit applications through the South African Department of Home Affairs ETA portal before departure.
The ETA provides pre-authorisation to travel. Border authorities will make the final admission decision when visitors arrive in South Africa.
